The Purulia district forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The basic situation is terrain rising and lowering with dotted hills. Panchet Hill reaches 1,600 feet ( 490 m). Although the Panchet Dam across the river Damodar is in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand state, the river Damodar is like the northern periphery of the district. Raghunathpur division absorbs the northern portion of the district. Of the people living in the subdivision, 83.80% live outside of cities.
Conversely, there are pockets of urbanization, and 16.20% of the population resides in municipal districts. Two thermal power plants—the 500 MW Santaldih Thermal Power Station and the 1200 MW Raghunathpur Thermal Power Station—as well as a coal removal division close to Parbelia exist. Old sites of worship abound throughout the division; some of them date back to the 11th century or earlier. A Memorial of national importance, the Banda Deul Panchkot Raj also has fascinating relics here.
